Girls and Autism

Met veel ongeduld had ik gewacht op een boek over autisme en meisjes. Spijtig genoeg vult dit boek de verwachtingen niet volkomen in.
Het verwachtte stuk theorie toont aan dat het klassieke autisme gedragsmatig kijkt naar het gedrag van jongens. Hierdoor wordt het autisme bij meisjes vaak niet herkent en krijgen deze meisjes dus ook niet de nodige ondersteuning. Dit is weer zo pijnlijk om te lezen, omdat je merkt hoe moeilijk het voor deze meisjes gaat.
De complexiteit van autisme wordt mooi in de verf gezet. Hierdoor blijft het van belang om te kijken naar de positieve sterktepunten van mensen in plaats van de moeilijkheden.
Verder tref je er nog tal van ervaringsverhalen in aan. Deze geven je een inzicht in de complexiteit van een leven met autisme van deze jonge meisjes. Enkel alleen voor deze is het weer de moeite waard om dit boek te lezen. Je wordt als het ware weer wakker geschud.
